Kallistos I

   Patriarch of Constantinople (qq.v.) from 1350-1353, and again from 1355-1363. He was one of three Hesychast (q.v.) monks to occupy the patriarchal throne (the other two were Isidore I Boucheiras and Philotheos Kokkinos [qq.v.]), all of whom were friends of Gregory Palamas (q.v.). Kallistos was also a disciple of Gregory Sinaites (q.v.). In 1351 he presided over a local council in Constantinople (q.v.), convened by John VI Kantakouzenos (q.v.), that condemned anti-Palamites. However, in 1353, he resigned rather than participate in the coronation of Matthew I Kantakouzenos (q.v.). He was replaced with Philotheos Kokkinos (q.v.), but he was recalled to office when John V (q.v.) regained his throne.
